Risking It – Weekend Snowboarding {Keystone}

Yesterday we decided to risk it…we made the drive up to Summit County on a Sunday. If you have ever driven into the mountains on a weekend you know exactly why we’ve been avoiding this for the past two years. Weekend traffic – combined with weekend lift lines – can be absolutely horrible!

We figured an early start to the day during the early season would give us an advantage. Turns out this tactic worked out pretty darn well for us! We met Lynne at the Dino Lots at 7:15am and were parked at Keystone by 8:30am. Probably the earliest I’ve ever been in a resort parking lot!

Cupcake! And the backside of Keystone…with SNOW!

Turns out front row parking and perfectly groomed trails aren’t the only perk to arriving before the lifts start – Keystone was giving out cupcakes! Yup, cupcakes. Huge, frosting laden cupcakes! They asked that everyone taking a cupcake write a quick thank you to the troops. Love this idea – you don’t need to bribe me with cupcakes for me to give a truly heartfelt “THANK YOU” to everyone who has made my rather privileged American living possible! Seriously, THANK YOU!

We kept the EpicMix photographers busy…and don’t judge Lynne’s jump until you’ve tried jumping in ski boots!

We spent the first few hours of the day playing around on the three runs that were open. Yea, definitely early season without a lot of options but the runs were not that crowded…at least not until after 11am! Then things got a little crazy. The lift lines got long, the runs were packed and we decided we were hungry. The plan was to bail early to avoid I-70 traffic and allow for a productive Sunday afternoon so it all worked out perfectly. The mountain got busy, we headed home.

I definitely prefer to spend a Monday at resorts but now that we know early morning Sunday’s are hellish we will most likely be back…especially if it means we get to head up with friends! Up next…a #MountainMonday at Rocky Mountain National Park! We’re headed that way right now and are crossing our fingers its not too crowded since entrance fees are waived for Veteran’s Day! There is a hike we’ve been meaning to revisit for months, it might actually happen today!

    • I’m glad we figured this out early in the season as it looks like work is going to be eating up our Monday trips to the mountains. Silly jobs and adulthood!

      Yup…cupcakes. Tho I’m pretty sure I got more frosting on my gloves than in my mouth!

  1. Awesome deal on the cupcakes! Great idea :) I’m going to miss Keystone this year. I love night-skiing there, but we went with the Winter Park/Copper 2 for 1 deal this year. Got to switch it up every once in a while!

    • I’m biased toward snowboarding…but its all I know. However, once you learn one the other is pretty easy to pick up – I’ve only been on skis one time since I learned to board, but it was pretty uneventful because I’d already figured out how to use my body weight to balance/control myself. Definitely get out there and give one (or both!) a try!

    • If you prepare for and plan around I70 traffic it isn’t horrible – you just have to remember to consider it. And its the same for driving up to RMNP via Boulder…don’t do it at 8am, you’ll hate yourself! :)
