Life has been crazy…a different kind of crazy than I’m usually giddy about. The “adulting” kind of crazy where everything revolves around going to work, working, washing clothes for work, making lunches for work and sometimes sleeping. Not exactly glamorous but I’m surviving and finding a way to enjoy it. I’ve also found a little snippet of time to make a few changes here in my little corner of the internet! As of today run.around.aroo will be fading away while I spend my time writing + oversharing here, on heidikumm.com. I’ll give you no “growing up” or “moving on” explanation simply because I don’t have one. I wanted a change and this just kind of happened! You’ll notice both Instagram + Twitter have switched over to @heidikumm, too. Of course, run.around.aroo won’t be going anywhere, it’s fun to scroll back through … [Click Here For the Full Story]

Strength Training Survival Tactics

I am new to this whole ultra running thing, I’m even a little hesitant to call myself an ultra runner, yet. But I have learned one thing that I’m kind of loving. Apparently in ultra running (and maybe every other form of running?) there is an “off season”. A time to recoup from training plans, a time to run for fun or not at all, a time to eat an entire sheet cake because you’re a runner (maybe not a valid excuse, but I’d accept it) and a time to ramp up for the next onslaught of long training weeks, high mileage runs and “goal races”. In the past I’ve never really proclaimed an off season and I probably haven’t exactly earned this off season but that doesn’t mean I’m not avoiding anything remotely similar to a training plan while … [Click Here For the Full Story]

Oddly Guilty…

I am feeling oddly guilty today. It really is rather ridiculous and I’m fully aware of the sheer lunacy of this guilt but that doesn’t make it vanish. Nope. Not even a little bit. Not even multiple trips up/down the stairs to my 12th floor office just to stay warm is making this guilt go away. What have I done to bring on this guilt? I didn’t run. On a rare day in Colorado when the high didn’t make it out of the single digit temperatures I chose to stay burrowed under the blankets with the body heat of two toasty cats and a hot husband. They were all radiating heat and sleeping so peacefully. I didn’t want to wake them up. Besides, I was tired and none of my usually AM running buddies were meeting me. No motivation, no … [Click Here For the Full Story]

A Perfect Mix

This week will be the first week in many months that I’ve actually had a legitimate work week. You know, the standard kind where you go to work for 8+ hours a day for 5 days a week. My first one in months. I’m loving the “in months” part of that, not exactly head over heels for the week ahead of me. I’ve been blessed but now its time for the reality of adult life to kick in. Obviously this isn’t exactly part of the perfect mix… My perfect mix is a lot more fun than working and this past week I managed to get a little bit of everything Colorado has to offer in December. Backcountry powder. Corduroy runs. Rolling trails. Gorgeous sunsets. Incredible people. Cuddly cat. Splitboarding at Butler Gulch Early morning riding at Keystone Sunny trail runs … [Click Here For the Full Story]

The Reality {2013 Colorado Flood}

On Monday we made the drive up to Rocky Mountain National Park for the first time in months. Our last trip up was in July when we hiked from the Chapin Trailhead. Since then wildfires and flooding kept us out of the park. We had plenty of other areas to explore so we didn’t think much of it…until Monday. We headed north to Boulder and I whined as we sat in traffic – don’t drive toward Boulder at 8am, you’ll regret it. I’ve been to Boulder multiple times since the floodwaters came through two months ago but haven’t seen much of the true damage – it was no different this time through. We stuck to the main roads and had no reminder of the floods until we saw the sign that said “Highway 7 closed to Estes Park”. We were … [Click Here For the Full Story]
